Mr Carey's first reviews...

I thought I'd get the ball rolling with some quick reviews! If you'd like to write about what you've been reading please feel free to let me know.

The last two things I've read have been comic books. I know I'm a librarian, but that doesn't mean I'm boring all the time! The first was the Scott Pilgrim series. You might have seen the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World over the summer - well these are the books the film was based on. Scott Pilgrim is the bass player in a Toronto band, and has an easy life until he meets Ramona Flowers. Scott wants to go out with Ramona, but to do so he has to fight her 7 "evil exes" in increasingly weird and wonderful situations. The books are funny, action-packed, and beautifully drawn in a simple but effective manga style. Superb.

The second was the far more serious graphic novel Maus. This is an eye-openingly frank tale of life as a Polish Jew during the holocaust in World War 2 - based on a real-life account by the author's father. In the book, the Jews are drawn as mice and the Nazis as cats - this is intended to show how ridiculous it is to divide human beings into different categories, but also highlights the helplessness of the holocaust victims to stop what was happening to them. I would recommend this to anyone studying WW2, as it is a different and interesting way to find out what life was really like in 1940s Poland. Tough to read but essential.
